Echoes of Authoritarianism in Berlin

I used to wonder how the Nazis galvanised their ‘Untertanen’ (underlings) during that terrible time in Germany’s history. Sure, they used fear and authoritarianism to get people to betray friends and family for the Fuehrer, but there was a point in history where things could have gone the other way. Meeting far-left ideologists in Berlin ahead of the German federal election made me realise how it all happened—and how it is happening again.

I took a walk around Germany’s capital ahead of the elections on February 23rd. Between election posters, cool cafes, and currywurst stands, far-left activists were protesting ‘Nazis’ and for extreme-left authoritarianism.

The Self-ID Debate Dodged

“I can’t talk about woke, because I’m right,” a young man in a pub told me. I had mentioned the German #selbstbestimmungsgesetz, a self-ID law, where a person can change gender each year and there are over 100 genders to pick from the gender buffet. Should someone misgender you, they face a fine of up to €10,000.

The word Nazi is being thrown around willy-nilly. Anything left of Chairman Mao is a Nazi. I always thought Nazis were Goebbels, Goering, Hitler, the SS—excrescent humans who did despicable things. It stands for the worst of humanity, not someone who thinks 100 genders is a bit much.

After parting ways, I walked up to the famous ‘Unter den Linden’ boulevard close to the Brandenburg Gate, where I met far-woke climate activists. “People don’t care about climate anymore,” a female activist shared. I agreed. “They don’t. They care about wars and going to Mars more than cutting CO2 emissions.”

Perhaps we’re on the same page? The environment has taken a backseat—even in Berlin, where there was rubbish all over the place. She went on: “All they care about is deporting those awful migrants,” irony intended.

“Well, a few should be,” I said, considering the recent terrorist attack in Munich, where an Afghani man who was on the police radar and should have been deported drove into a crowd of people—killing a mother and her two-year-old daughter.

She did not agree. I heard the usual excuses: “He wasn’t integrated properly,” “it’s an isolated incident,” and my favourite one—“Germans do that too.” “Really?” The argument that Germans are just as bad does nothing for the pro-immigration stance. Even if it were true, it proves that we have our own psychotic lunes and do not need more. But that is not the way these people see it. “Well, the stress of possible deportation didn’t help.”

Crime, Migrants, and Excuses

I had a look at the tally—118,632 suspects without a German passport committed a violent act within 18 months. 1,221 foreigners committed murder or manslaughter. According to the BKA (Bundes Kriminal Amt) (Federal Investigative Police Agency of Germany), 154,922 Germans were victims of crimes by non-German passport holders in 2023, but who’s counting?

Last year, the Federal Police found 127,549 irregular migrants entering Germany. Gang rape, knife crime, and altercations between clans are happening daily. I am half-German, and I do not remember that happening before 2015, when Chancellor Angela Merkel opened the borders.

The ‘Good People’ Turning Fascist

But there is no arguing with these people. A colleague of hers was even worse. He hated me because I flew to Berlin, rather than walking, which is better for the climate. “I’m a busy parent, so I had to fly out,” I said. He went on about the scourge of capitalism and that people had to be told what to do- just like children. “When children do wrong, adults must interfere. It is the same with people. If they don’t do what they should, they need to be told.”

It got worse; “You’re drinking Gluhwein- that’s alcohol and I disapprove…” And off he went. The thing about the ‘Gutmenschen’ (good people) is- they are doing more harm than gut. They are also not that gut.

Part of a new army of pro-government minions, a cohort of Germans- mostly Green Party, social democrat (SPD) and Die Linke voters happily rage with the machine. They take to the streets in ‘Protests against the right.’ They are cosseted far woke bourgeois oat milk drinking morons. I asked one lady about the ‘Right”. “What does it mean?” People who are not left? Not even far right?” That term does not exist in Germany, she informed me. OK so everyone who does not agree with them is right and therefore bad.

They all have the same uniform. Knitted hat, cords, hairy legs, blue hair, ignorant, arrogant, adrift of the people around them. Every time there is a terrorist attack, be it an Afghani murdering a child and a random passer-by in the small town of Aschaffenburg or an Afghani ploughing into a crowd at the Christmas Market in Magdeburg. Rather than protest open borders, they take to the streets protesting the right- or the AFD (Alternative for Germany). The Green party, who is currently in the German government is giving funds to these protests along with NGOs and other well-meaning do-gooders.

They are also supported by German media who frame news stories about the AFD (Germany’s right-wing party) and any attacks by immigrants with the usual platitudes.

The AFD has been getting a lot of bad press- and rightly so. They have a dubious connection to Russia that I do not know enough about to pass comment on, and they have a lunatic fringe. They are, however, not a neo-Nazi party, as these authoritarians suggest, because if they were, they would have been disbanded. They are also not responsible for Germany’s recent economic and social decline. This began during Angela Merkel’s reign of error and was turbocharged by the current far woke green government, whose leaders are not afraid of getting the police to make house calls to people who criticise them. This is not hyperbole. It is true.

The German leader of the Green Party, Robert Habeck has filed more than 700 reports of hate speech since 2023. One guy called him a ‘Schwachkopf,” (weak head, moron) online. The cops called to his house. He has a down syndrome child. It was traumatising. The recent CBS documentary highlighting Germany’s hate crime laws is just the tip of the iceberg.

No one is safe -even a bus driver who while driving a bus with young people on it, listened to the radio and AFD friendly songs came on. A concerned self-appointed guardian of political correctness ratted him out. The bus driver fell afoul of the PC cult and was fired. Ironically, he is of African descent. He arrived in Germany to fill vacant positions.

The German green party and its sycophantic disciples are the areal fascists here.

A Nation at a Crossroads

I met a friend, who is an ‘anti-woke ‘leftie.’ “People got used to being sheep during Covid 19. They got used to calling out people who were not following the rules. It is quite eye opening. They love rules- even young people. In work and life.”

These authoritarians are the minority who hijacked education, media, and politics, but most Germans want change. They want a more conservative government. The Greens only have 13% of the vote, but it is still too much. “They destroyed the country. They make politics for minorities, paid for by the majority. They are also responsible for the popularity of the AFD right wing party, who had 10% of the vote when they were elected, and have 20% now.”

These authoritarians do not release that by taking to the streets, calling to people’s homes, and ratting out bus drivers who listen to the radio, they are creating an Orwellian state- which will make people vote for the AFD. Morons.

On the plus side- if there is one- now we know how it all went wrong 80 years ago and it is scary.

*gender ideology has gained a foothold in institutions at every level of German society, from youth groups to the media. Germany’s Self-ID laws are among the most troubling in the world, not only because they give men unfettered access to single-sex spaces such as women’s shelters and prisons, but for the way such developments are celebrated. These developments are not taking place in a vacuum.
